The short answer
A fake Cartier Baignoire 2515 usually gives itself away in three places: the oval case profile, the dial printing, and the engravings on the back. Real Baignoire cases flow from the oval into the lugs without a shoulder. Fakes look like a stretched circle with horns welded on. If the text on the dial looks thick, if the crown cabochon is plastic or sits in a blob of glue, or if the numbers on the caseback look stamped instead of cut, walk away. Price is the fourth tell. A solid gold Baignoire at a third of market value is not a bargain.

What reference 2515 actually is
The Baignoire is Cartier's bathtub shape, drawn in 1912 and given the name in 1973. Vintage and neo-vintage examples carry a range of reference numbers, and 2515 turns up on yellow gold cases from the 1990s, most of them quartz, most of them on a strap. Cartier reference numbers from that era are not tidy, so treat any listing's claim as a starting point. Ask for a Cartier extract or service papers before money moves. A seller who cannot produce the reference on paper is asking you to trust a photo.
The case profile
I hold the watch at eye level and look along the top edge. The genuine case has a soft crown, a gentle rise, and a bezel that meets the crystal with almost no step. Copies from the usual sources have a flatter top and a visible ledge. Flip it over. The lugs on a real Baignoire taper and curve down toward the wrist. On fakes they are straight blocks with sharp inner corners. Measure the case too. A 2515 should sit in the small, dress-watch range. If the numbers come out a millimeter wide of the reference, someone built a bigger watch to fit a cheap movement.
Dial and printing
Cartier printing is thin, black, and consistent. Under a loupe, the letters in CARTIER should have even strokes, and the word PARIS or SWISS MADE at six should sit on a clean baseline. Fakes show fat serifs, uneven spacing, or ink that sits on top of the lacquer like paint. Look at the numerals. Roman numerals on a genuine dial are crisp, with sharp interior angles. On replicas the VIII and the XII go mushy, and the minute track dots drift out of line. Blue sword hands should be flat and matte, with a clean edge, not glossy and slightly bent.

Crown, cabochon, and caseback
The crown on a gold Baignoire is gold with a sapphire or spinel cabochon set flush. Fakes use plastic, glass, or a dyed stone that sits proud in a metal cup. Run a fingernail over it. A real cabochon is smooth and level with the crown surface.
Now the back. Engravings should be shallow, even, and cut with a sharp tool. Reference and serial numbers sit in a straight line, and the gold hallmarks are struck where you expect them, not laser-etched in a block of text. Many fakes use a single line of machine engraving with a font that looks like it came off a printer.
Movement and feel
Most 2515 examples are quartz, which makes the movement check simple. Open the back if the seller allows it. A genuine Cartier quartz calibre has clean bridges, signed plates, and a battery clamp that fits. Cheap copies show bare brass, hot glue, and a movement with no maker's mark. Wind or set the hands and feel the crown. It should turn with light, even resistance. Grit or wobble means the stem and crown are aftermarket.
The price reality check
Gold Baignoire prices move with the market, but they do not collapse. If a listing is 60 to 80 percent below the going rate for a comparable sold example, the watch is not a hidden gem. Ask what the seller paid, ask for service history, and compare against auction results for the same reference in the same metal. Also check the weight in grams against a known example. Gold cases have a density that plated brass and steel do not.
Before you buy
- Get the caseback photo in raking light so the engraving depth shows.
- Ask for a movement shot, even on a quartz watch.
- Check that the reference on the paper matches the reference on the case.
- Have a watchmaker confirm the case is solid gold, not plated.
None of this is exotic. A loupe, a scale, and ten minutes of careful looking catch most of what circulates as a Baignoire 2515.
