Short answer
No single photo test proves a Royal Oak 15500 is genuine. Replicas copy the dial, case, and bracelet well enough to fool most people at arm's length. The decisive check is the movement. A real 15500ST runs Audemars Piguet Calibre 4302, an in-house automatic with a 70 hour power reserve, 4 Hz frequency, hacking seconds, and a quickset date. Most counterfeits run a Miyota 9015 or a low grade clone with the wrong beat rate, a shorter reserve, and rough finishing under the display back. Judge the seller first, then have the movement inspected before any money moves.
Prerequisites
- A 10x jeweler's loupe and a bright diffused light.
- Digital calipers that read to 0.01 mm.
- A timegrapher, or a watchmaker who owns one.
- Reference photos of a known genuine 15500ST taken from the same angles.
- A watchmaker willing to remove the case back and document what is inside.
In-hand checks
- Measure the case with calipers. A genuine 15500ST is 41 mm wide and 10.4 mm thick. Counterfeits often run 1 mm or more thicker because the case was sized around a third party movement.
- Inspect the dial texture under the loupe. The Grande Tapisserie squares should have flat, sharply cut tops and even depth. Fake dials show rounded edges and uneven spacing between the squares.
- Read the printed text. The applied AP monogram at 12 o'clock should sit flat, polished, and free of glue squeeze out. The words AUDEMARS PIGUET and AUTOMATIQUE should be crisp, evenly spaced, and aligned to the same baseline on both sides of the dial.
- Study the date aperture. On the 15500 it is larger than on the 15400 it replaced and sits closer to the outer edge of the dial. The numerals should be centered in the window with a clean typeface. Crooked or thin numerals point to a fake date wheel.
- Check the bezel screws. Eight hexagonal screws should sit flush with the bezel surface, with consistent slot depth and no tool chatter around the heads. Replicas often sit proud, strip easily, or show buffed edges.
- Look down the bracelet. Genuine links taper toward the clasp with polished bevels and hand chamfered edges. Fake bracelets show sharp edges, wavy brushing, and gaps at the end links.
- Examine the hands. Genuine Royal Oak hands are white gold with faceted, mirror polished edges. Replicas use steel or plated brass, so the bevels look dull and the tips are thicker.
- Inspect the clasp engraving. The AP monogram and the AUDEMARS PIGUET stamp should be deep, sharp, and centered on the folding blade.
Bench checks
- Run the watch on a timegrapher. Calibre 4302 beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour, or 4 Hz. A reading near 21,600 points to a Miyota based counterfeit.
- Wind it fully and let it sit for 70 hours. A real 4302 still runs. A fake usually stops well short of that mark.
- Remove the case back. Look for the 4302 layout, Geneva stripes, a skeletonized gold rotor with the AP crest, and a balance running at 4 Hz. Look for 32 jewels and engraved caliber markings. A blank rotor or a plastic movement spacer ends the discussion.
- Verify the reference and case number against the Audemars Piguet register or an authorized dealer service record.
Paperwork and price
Genuine examples come with a warranty card that matches the case number, a numbered certificate, and a box with correct printing and hardware. Service history from an authorized center is a strong signal. Price is the bluntest tell of all. A steel 15500ST trades in the tens of thousands of dollars on the secondary market. Any offer in the hundreds or low thousands is a counterfeit, no matter what the listing says.
Legal and financial risk
Buying a counterfeit is not a victimless shortcut. In the United States, trafficking in counterfeit goods is a criminal offense under 18 U.S.C. 2320, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection can seize shipments and pursue penalties. The buyer gets no manufacturer warranty, no parts support, and no service from Audemars Piguet. Resale value is close to zero, and many watchmakers refuse to open clone movements because replacement parts do not exist.
