Short answer
The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak 15500 is a 41 mm steel watch with an octagonal bezel and eight hexagonal screws. Audemars Piguet built it from 2019 to 2022, then replaced it with the 15510. Fake versions sell for $300 to $1,500. They match the outline, the dial layout, and the bracelet shape. They do not match the movement, the finishing, or the caseback. US law bans the import and the sale of these watches.
The genuine reference
Audemars Piguet released the 15500ST in 2019 as the successor to the 15400. The line closed in 2022.

What the copies are
Sellers label these watches "1:1," "super clone," or "AAA." Most use a third-party automatic movement with a decorated rotor and plates. Case and bracelet come from machined stainless steel. Case depth runs past the original because the movement stack is deeper. Caseback and clasp engraving is laser-cut. Cheaper tiers ship a mineral crystal in place of sapphire. Some sellers ship a solid caseback to hide the movement.
Tells on a fake Royal Oak 15500
- Thickness. Genuine is 10.4 mm. Copies measure 11 mm to 12 mm with calipers.
- Bezel screws. Eight hex screws sit flush on the genuine watch, with slots in a consistent direction. Copies show random slot angles, proud heads, or stripped sockets.
- Dial grid. Grande Tapisserie squares have sharp edges. Copies show shallow squares, soft corners, and print that drifts off center.
- Date font. The 15500 date wheel uses a set typeface. Copies use a generic font or a window that sits high or low.
- Movement. A sapphire back shows the Calibre 4302. Copies show rough brushing on the rotor, a wrong jewel count, or a balance wheel in the wrong place.
- Bracelet and clasp. Link edges on copies feel sharp. The AP logo on the clasp is shallow.
- Weight. Weight is not a reliable test on its own. Copies vary.
Legal position in the US
18 U.S.C. 2320 makes trafficking in counterfeit goods a federal crime. A first offense carries up to 10 years in prison. Civil claims fall under the Lanham Act, 15 U.S.C. 1114 and 1117. Statutory damages reach $2,000,000 per counterfeit mark per type of goods when the use is willful. CBP can seize counterfeit watches at the border. Customs rules allow a narrow exemption for one item carried by a traveler. That exemption does not cover mail shipments.
Buyer risk
Payment methods used by counterfeit sellers lack chargeback rights. A buyer who sends money by wire or crypto has no recovery path. Counterfeit watches also appear in the used market listed as genuine. A steel 15500 trades above list, so the loss on a fake sold as real runs to five figures. Audemars Piguet service centers do not service counterfeit watches. A watchmaker who opens the case can confirm the movement in minutes. Independent authentication runs $100 to $300.
Checks before a resale purchase
- Ask for movement photos through the sapphire back.
- Ask for a timegrapher reading. The Calibre 4302 runs at 28,800 vph with a 70-hour reserve.
- Measure case thickness with calipers.
- Check the serial through a boutique or an authorized service center. Audemars Piguet does not run a public serial lookup.
- Pay with a method that carries buyer protection and keep records.
Genuine 15500 boxes and papers exist, and counterfeiters copy them. Paperwork alone does not prove a watch is real.
