Short answer
A fake Breguet Classique Ultra Thin is a counterfeit of the Breguet Classique reference 5157 and its thin siblings. The genuine watch measures 38 mm across and about 5.4 mm thick, with an automatic movement 2.4 mm thick. Copy makers sell these as 1:1 super clones. The thin case is the part they get wrong most, because a thin automatic movement costs more to build than a stock one.
Genuine reference points
Breguet Classique 5157: 38 mm case, about 5.4 mm thick, sapphire caseback, fluted case band, welded lugs. The dial is hand-turned guilloché. The hands are blued steel with hollow eccentric tips. A secret signature is engraved into the dial. Caseback numbers match Breguet records. Breguet confirms a serial through a boutique or authorized dealer. Specs differ by reference, so check Breguet's own listing or a dealer for exact figures.
Where counterfeits fail
- Thickness. A real 5157 is about 5.4 mm. Most fakes sit at 7 mm to 9 mm because the movement is a stock automatic.
- Guilloché. Real dials are cut on a rose engine. Fakes use printed patterns or stamped foil. Hold the dial at an angle. Printed lines look flat. Cut lines show depth.
- Hands. Real Breguet hands are blued steel with an eccentric hollow tip. Fakes are stamped, painted, or too thick.
- Movement. Look through the caseback. A real Breguet shows a hand-engraved rotor, polished bevels, and blued screws. Fakes show plain bridges and generic rotors.
- Print. The word BREGUET and the reference number are often the wrong size, spacing, or typeface.
Checks before you pay
- Ask for a photo of the caseback and the movement. No movement photo means no sale.
- Measure case thickness with calipers. Above 6.5 mm on a 5157 style case is a red flag.
- Compare dial print against Breguet's own photos.
- Ask for service papers or a Breguet service record. Counterfeit sellers cannot produce one.
- Call Breguet with the serial. They confirm the watches they made.
US law
Trafficking in counterfeit goods is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. 2320. A first offense carries up to 10 years in prison and a $2,000,000 fine for an individual. Repeat offenses reach 20 years. Civil suits under the Lanham Act, 15 U.S.C. 1117(c), allow statutory damages up to $2,000,000 per counterfeit mark per type of goods when the counterfeiting is willful. US Customs and Border Protection can seize and destroy counterfeit watches under 19 U.S.C. 1526. The personal-use exemption for one item covers genuine gray-market goods, not counterfeits.
Unknowns
Counterfeit factories ship batches with different movements, dials, and cases under one listing name. No fixed specification exists for a fake Breguet Classique Ultra Thin, so a photo of one fake does not describe the next. No public count exists of how many counterfeit Breguet watches enter the US each year. CBP reports seizures by category, not by brand.
