The short answer

Most watches sold as a fake Breguet tourbillon minute repeater are not minute repeaters. A true repeater needs a rack, a snail cam, two tuned gongs, and two hammers that strike the hours, quarters, and minutes on demand. That mechanism costs more to build than the entire case and dial of a counterfeit. Sellers work around this by fitting a quartz module that plays a recorded chime through a small speaker, or by leaving the slide piece disconnected so it moves with no effect. If a listing shows a Breguet Classique with a visible tourbillon and a repeater slide for a few hundred dollars, the chime is the first thing to test and the first thing that fails.

Why the repeater is the hardest function to copy

The tourbillon is visual. A rotating cage can be machined, polished, and shown off through an aperture, and a buyer can see that it turns. A minute repeater is mechanical and audible, and it has to work in the dark, on demand, at any time the wearer chooses. The slide winds a small spring, the spring drives the rack, the rack reads the time off the snail cams, and the hammers strike gongs that are tuned to a specific pitch. Every one of those parts has to be sized to a tolerance measured in microns. Counterfeiters copy the look of the cage and skip the rest.

What you need before you inspect

  • A 10x loupe and a bright, diffuse light source
  • Digital calipers that read to 0.01 mm
  • The published reference specifications for the exact model
  • A quiet room with no fans, music, or traffic noise
  • A soft cloth and a caseback tool if the seller permits opening

How to check a suspected fake, step by step

  1. Write down the exact reference number the seller claims and match it to a published Breguet specification sheet.
  2. Measure the case diameter, case thickness, and lug width with calipers and compare each figure to the published numbers.
  3. Turn the watch over and study the tourbillon cage with the loupe, looking for hand-beveled steel, polished screw heads, and a cage bridge that is finished on every surface.
  4. Trace the gongs around the inside edge of the movement and confirm they are two separate round rods, not a printed line or a glued decorative strip.
  5. Locate the hammers and the rack and confirm they sit above the mainplate as working parts with pivots and springs.
  6. Slide the repeater lever at the 9 or 10 o'clock position and feel the resistance build as the spring winds.
  7. Release the lever and listen in a silent room, then count the strikes and confirm the hours, quarters, and minutes are all present.
  8. Watch the slide piece return to its rest position on its own and check that it does not stick or rattle.
  9. Inspect the dial printing under the loupe for crisp, raised lettering with no ink bleed, and check that the hands have polished bevels on every edge.
  10. Compare the engraved serial number and caseback hallmarks to the paperwork and ask for an archive extract.
  11. Take the watch to an independent watchmaker and pay for a movement inspection before any money changes hands.

What counterfeiters get wrong most often

  • The chime is a recording played through a speaker, or there is no sound at all
  • The tourbillon cage turns on a quartz-driven gear instead of a real escapement
  • Gongs are molded into the movement plate as decoration
  • Case thickness runs one to three millimeters off because the fake movement is a different shape
  • Screws are slotted or cross-head instead of the correct polished flat head
  • Serial numbers repeat across multiple units from the same seller

Legal and ownership realities

Importing counterfeit watches into the United States is illegal, and shipments are subject to seizure and destruction. A counterfeit carries no manufacturer warranty, no service parts, and no resale market. Authorized watchmakers will not touch one, and independent watchmakers often decline because parts cannot be sourced. If the chime fails six months after purchase, the repair cost can exceed the price of the watch. The only reliable way to own a genuine tourbillon minute repeater is to buy through a documented channel with full paperwork.
