Short answer
A fake IWC dress watch is a counterfeit copy of an IWC Portofino, Portugieser, or Da Vinci. Counterfeit prices run about $50 to $600. Genuine IWC dress watches start near $4,000 and pass $30,000 for gold or complication models. The copies are not built by IWC Schaffhausen. They are illegal to import into the United States.
IWC dress models that get copied
- Portofino Automatic 40, reference 3565 and 3564 series.
- Portofino Chronograph, reference 3910 series.
- Portugieser Automatic 40, reference 3583 series.
- Da Vinci Automatic, older reference 3566 series.
These models use thin steel or gold cases, leather straps, and clean dials. That shape is cheap to copy in a small workshop. The movements are not.
Movement: the clearest tell
Genuine IWC dress watches made after 2005 use in-house calibers. Examples: the 32000 family, the 52000 family, and the 69000 family. Beat rate is 28,800 vibrations per hour on most. Power reserve runs 42 to 168 hours.
Counterfeits use Chinese movements. Common bases: Seagull ST21, Hangzhou 6300, or a decorated clone of the ETA 2824. Some run at 21,600 vph. Rotor engraving is shallow. Geneva stripes on fake bridges are printed, not cut. A watchmaker with a timing machine reads the beat rate in under a minute.
Dial, hands, date
Check the printing at 10x magnification. Genuine IWC text has sharp edges. Fake text has rounded or filled letters. Applied indices on copies sit high or sit crooked. The date wheel uses a different font. The "International Watch Co." and "Schaffhausen" lines mismatch in weight on many copies.
Case and caseback
Reference numbers are engraved on the caseback. A Portofino Automatic 40 is 3565. Counterfeit sellers print a number that does not match the model. Engraving depth on copies is shallow. Serial numbers on copies repeat across batches. Genuine IWC serials hold six or seven digits and track production order.
Price and listing signals
- Price under $1,000 for a steel model with box and papers.
- Photos showing the watch sealed in plastic wrap.
- Seller offers any model in any dial color on request.
- No service history, no receipt, no warranty card with a matching serial.
How to verify
- Ask for a caseback photo at high resolution.
- Match the reference number to the model.
- Match the serial number to the warranty card.
- Send the serial to an IWC boutique or authorized service center.
- Have a watchmaker open the caseback and read the caliber number on the movement.
IWC does not publish a public serial database. Verification goes through a boutique or service center. That step takes days.
Legal status in the US
Counterfeit watches are prohibited merchandise in the US. CBP seizes shipments and destroys them. Trafficking in counterfeit goods carries up to 10 years in prison for a first offense and 20 years for repeat offenses under 18 U.S.C. 2320. A personal purchase is not a trafficking charge, but the item can still be seized.
