The short answer

A fake Lange 1 Moon Phase is almost always a 38 to 41mm hand-wound or automatic copy built around one of a handful of Asian movements, dressed with a silver-tone dial and a decorated display back. The genuine watch it copies is a 38.5mm German hand-wound piece whose moon phase stays accurate to one day in 122.6 years. Very few replicas get near that number, and the moon is the first place I look.

Why the moon phase gives most copies away

On the real watch the moon aperture sits inside the small seconds subdial at roughly the 4 o'clock position. It runs off a 59-tooth disc, one tooth per day, which is exactly why the correction interval is so long. Cheap copies shortcut this in two ways. Some use a 24-hour disc that spins a full turn every day and pretends to be lunar. Others use a proper 29.5-day disc but print the moon and stars flat, with no relief under the crystal. Put a copy on a table, note the moon position, and come back 24 hours later. A real moon phase has stepped forward a tiny amount. A day/night disc has gone all the way around.

Dial layout and the outsize date

The Lange 1 dial is off-center by design: time at the top left, outsize date at the top right, power reserve at the bottom left, seconds and moon at the bottom right. Copies usually get the positions right and the proportions wrong. What I check: the date font, since the genuine uses two separate discs and a specific high-contrast typeface rather than one printed window; the thickness and polish of the applied Roman numerals; and whether the "Auf" and "Ab" markings on the power reserve arc are crisp or mushy. On most fakes the power reserve is decorative, and the needle does not move as you wind.

Case size and thickness

Genuine dimensions are 38.5mm across and about 10mm thick for the standard Lange 1 Moon Phase, with the Grand Lange 1 Moon Phase at 41mm. A large share of fakes come in at 40mm or more and sit 12mm tall, because the movement plus moon module needs the room. If the seller's photos show a watch that looks slab-sided next to an ordinary dress watch, that alone tells you plenty.

Movement and finishing

This is where the money goes on a real one. The calibre inside the current Lange 1 Moon Phase uses a three-quarter plate in untreated German silver, screwed gold chatons, blued screws, and a balance cock that is hand-engraved by one engraver, so no two are identical. Replicas use laser etching or a stamped pattern that repeats exactly from watch to watch. Pull up two photos of the same model and compare the floral engraving on the balance cock. If the lines match perfectly, it is machine work.

Also confirm whether the movement is hand-wound or automatic. The genuine Lange 1 is hand-wound. Some copies are automatics with a small rotor tucked out of sight behind the display back, which is part of why they feel thicker and sound different when you shake them.

Price bands

Lange replicas sit below Rolex replicas in price and in quality, because demand is smaller and the movement is harder to fake. Expect roughly $250 to $700 for common versions, and $800 and up for hand-built pieces with a working hand-wound movement and a moon phase that actually cycles. Anything under $150 is usually quartz, or a 24-hour disc in a mechanical case. No copy in that range has a solid gold case. Gold-tone plating wears through at the lugs and caseback edges within months.

The US legal side

Counterfeit watches are illegal to import and to sell in the United States. CBP seizes shipments, and trafficking carries civil and criminal exposure. Buying one for personal use is lower risk than reselling, but goods can still be seized, and there is no warranty, no brand service, and no parts support. Lange will not touch a counterfeit, and most independent watchmakers who value their brand accounts will not either.
