The short answer
A fake Rolex 1908 is a counterfeit copy of the Rolex Perpetual 1908, the 39 mm gold dress watch Rolex introduced in 2023 as the replacement for the Cellini line. The real watch is sold only through Rolex and its authorized retailers, in 18 ct yellow gold, white gold, or Everose, with a small seconds subdial at 6 o'clock and Rolex calibre 7140 inside. Anything marketed as a 1908 at a discount, on a marketplace, or by a super clone seller is a trademark-infringing copy. It will not be serviced by Rolex, and it has no collector value.
Why this model gets copied
Dress watches in solid gold carry high retail prices, so a copy has a wide margin to sell into. The 1908 also has clean lines that are cheaper to reproduce than a chronograph. That combination pulls fakes onto the market fast, and it also makes the metal itself the first thing to check.
Check the case metal
- Place the watch on a kitchen scale. A 39 mm solid gold case with an alligator strap should read heavier than a plated brass or steel copy of the same size.
- Turn the watch over. Genuine Swiss gold cases carry precious metal assay marks. Many copies have no mark, a shallow stamp, or a mark in a spot Rolex does not use.
- Look at the case sides and bezel under a lamp. Gold plating on a copy shows an uneven tone, an orange cast, or thin patches where the base metal shows through.
- Compare the dial print to reference photos of the reference 52508 and 52509. The original has applied gold markers and crisp text. Copies show flat print, dust under the crystal, and markers that sit off center.
- Check the small seconds subdial at 6. On the real watch the track is fine and even. Copies often show wrong spacing or a subdial that sits low.
- Ask about the movement, then verify. The 1908 runs calibre 7140 with Superlative Chronometer certification. A copy runs a third-party or decorated clone movement with different finishing and no certification.
- Match the serial. The number between the lugs must match the warranty card and the paperwork that came with the watch.
- Check the strap and clasp. Genuine alligator with gold deployant hardware. Copies use embossed leather and base metal parts.
Red flags in listings
- A price below the melt value of 18 ct gold.
- Tier labels such as AAA, 1:1, Swiss super clone, or mirror quality.
- Stock renders instead of photos of the actual item.
- Overseas shipping with no return option.
- Payment demanded by wire, crypto, or gift card.
- No box, no papers, and no warranty card.
Legal and ownership facts
Rolex trademarks are protected in the United States and most markets. U.S. Customs and Border Protection can seize and destroy counterfeit watches at import, and trafficking in counterfeits carries civil and criminal exposure under federal trademark law. Watches and jewelry rank among the most counterfeited product categories in global trade. Beyond the legal risk, a fake 1908 has no lawful resale market, no parts support, and no service path.
Reselling a copy while presenting it as genuine is fraud, and it exposes the seller to criminal charges and civil damages.
