Short answer

Hippocampus is Omega's name for the seahorse emblem on Seamaster case backs. Seamaster 300M watches made around 2010 carry it, and that model is one of the most counterfeited Omegas. Authentication rests on four checks: the depth of the case back relief, the movement, the serial number, and the dial print. Omega keeps no public serial database. A definitive answer requires a watchmaker with the case open or an Omega service center.

What the emblem is

Omega added the hippocampus to Seamaster case backs in the 1950s. The mark shows a seahorse above stylized waves. On post-2000 Seamasters the back also carries the model name, the depth rating, and an eight-digit serial number. A counterfeit can copy the outline. Few copies match the relief depth and the tool marks.

Case back checks

  • Relief depth. Genuine engraving is stamped with sharp edges and flat floors. Most 2010-era fakes are laser-etched: shallow, with rounded edges.
  • Wave pattern. Ridges on a genuine back are continuous and equal in width. Fakes merge the ridges near the tail and the fin.
  • Text. Model name and depth rating sit at one depth with equal spacing. On fakes the depth shifts letter by letter.
  • Serial. Eight digits, stamped on the outer case back and repeated on the movement. Compare both. A mismatch means a fake or a swapped part.

Movement

Seamaster 300M references sold in 2010 used calibre 2500, a co-axial design based on the ETA 2892-A2. It runs at 25,200 vibrations per hour, about seven beats per second, and the rotor carries the Omega symbol and the word Co-Axial. Counterfeits of that period used copies of the ETA 2824, which run at 28,800 vph. The co-axial escapement has a distinct three-pronged pallet fork. A watchmaker identifies it under a loupe in a few minutes.

Dial, bezel, and case

  • Logo and indices on genuine dials are applied metal. Many fakes print them or use thick paint.
  • Date font on genuine is thin and tall. Fakes use a wider font and a smaller window.
  • The helium escape valve sits at 10 o'clock. On genuine it is a working crown. On many fakes it is a solid stud.
  • The bezel turns one way with firm detents and no back play.
  • Brushed and polished surfaces meet at a sharp line. Fakes round the edge.

Reference numbers matter

Case size, crystal, bracelet, and bezel insert changed inside the 2010 production window. Fix the exact reference number first, then compare against a documented example of that reference. A correct reference number sets the expected case diameter, clasp code, and bracelet part number.

Verification steps

  1. Request the reference number and serial before viewing.
  2. Photograph the case back under raking light. Relief depth shows as shadow.
  3. Have a watchmaker open the case. Photograph the movement and the inner case back.
  4. Send the watch to an Omega service center. A written service estimate is one practical signal; a center can refuse a counterfeit.
  5. Keep the photos and the estimate with the watch.

What cannot be confirmed

Omega does not publish serial-to-model data or production totals per reference. Counterfeit batches differ, so one flaw does not prove a watch is fake and one clean detail does not prove it is genuine. Price is a weak signal. Paperwork is a better one.
