- Weight: a steel Santos medium runs near 100 g on a full bracelet. Light units use hollow links.
- Bracelet screws: real Santos links use screws with a flat head. Pins mean a lower tier.
- Crown: the blue cabochon sits flush and spins free on the genuine watch.
- Dial text: check the word spacing under 10x magnification. Blur and thick strokes show pad printing.
- Caseback: the eight screws should sit at equal depth and line up.
- Water resistance: a commercial case with a press fit back has no gasket rating. Do not swim with it.
Legal status in the US
A watch that carries the Cartier name and the Santos case shape is a counterfeit good. Import, sale and resale violate the Lanham Act. US Customs and Border Protection can seize shipments at the port. Cartier does not service these watches and does not supply parts. A buyer holds no warranty and no recourse from the brand.
