Short answer
A replica Portugieser Automatic copies the IWC Portugieser case, dial, and hands. The movement is not the IWC cal. 52010. Most replicas run a Chinese automatic with a 38 to 45 hour power reserve. Prices run $80 to $600. The genuine IWC Portugieser Automatic 40 lists near $8,000 for steel models.
The genuine reference
The IWC Portugieser Automatic 42.3 mm carries the cal. 52010. IWC rates the power reserve at 168 hours. The movement has 31 jewels and runs at 28,800 vibrations per hour. Case height is 14.5 mm. IWC fits sapphire crystals on the front and the back. Water resistance is 3 bar.
Dial layout differs by reference. The Automatic 40 mm ref. 3583 puts small seconds at 6 o'clock. The 42 mm 7-day models put small seconds at 9 o'clock and a power reserve display at 3 o'clock.
The power reserve display is the hard part to copy. On the genuine watch one mainspring drives the movement for a week. Replica movements stop near 45 hours.
Movements used in replicas
Three movement families show up in replica Portugieser watches.
- Chinese automatic with a decorated rotor. Sellers list it as a clone 52010. Bridges carry Geneva stripes and IWC engraving. Power reserve: 38 to 45 hours.
- Seagull ST25 and similar Chinese automatics. Same case specs, different finishing on the rotor and bridges.
- Quartz behind a fake rotor in the cheapest copies. The seconds hand ticks, it does not sweep.
None of these use the Pellaton winding system. Pellaton winding uses a cam and two pawls to wind the mainspring from both rotor directions. A plain reverser wheel does not do that.
What to check
- Case back: sapphire on the top tier, steel on the rest.
- Power reserve: wind it full, wait 40 hours, then check the rate.
- Rotor: shake the watch near your ear. A loose wobble points to a low-grade movement.
- Markers: applied markers sit above the dial. Printed markers sit flat on the surface.
- Crown: thread the crown in and out 10 times. Rough threads mean a soft case tube.
- Date change: set the date and watch the flip. Budget movements flip over 30 minutes, not at midnight.
Price bands
Entry replicas sell for $80 to $150. Mid-tier pieces sell for $180 to $350. Top-tier pieces sell for $350 to $600. These band names come from seller catalogs, not from a standard.
Legal note
US law bans the import and sale of counterfeit watches. 18 U.S.C. § 2320 sets prison terms and fines for trafficking in counterfeit goods. CBP seizes counterfeit goods at ports of entry. Customs can seize a single watch shipped from abroad, even for personal use.
