Rolesor is Rolex's own trademarked word for a watch that combines steel with 18k gold in the same case and bracelet. An imitation Rolesor is a copy built to fake that two-tone look. Most use gold plating or a gold-tone coating over steel, and the better ones cap the bezel and center links with a thin layer of real gold. From across a table the effect can hold up. On a scale, or under a loupe, it usually does not. The gold is the tell.

What the word actually covers

Rolex has used Rolesor since the 1930s, and the name is still registered. Yellow Rolesor means yellow gold and steel. White Rolesor means white gold and steel. Everose Rolesor is the rose gold version. On a genuine watch the gold parts are solid 18k: the bezel, the crown, the center links, sometimes the polished case flanks. Nothing is plated. That single fact drives everything else, including price and weight.

How the copies get made

There is a rough hierarchy in the replica market, and two-tone models sit at the top of it because gold costs money.

rolex rolesor fake

  • Gold plating. A few microns of gold over 316L or 904L steel. Looks right on day one. Rubs through at the clasp and crown within months of daily wear.
  • Gold-tone coating. Titanium nitride or a similar PVD layer. Harder than plating, but the color skews yellow-orange and never quite matches real 18k under daylight.
  • Gold caps. The upper tier. A thin sheet of real gold wrapped over the bezel and center links, often lower purity than 18k and much thinner than the genuine part. This is the version that fools people in photos.
  • Full steel with gold color. The cheap end. Fails the weight test instantly and the color usually goes brassy at the edges.

Where an imitation gives itself away

Weight comes first. Gold runs about 19.3 g/cm3 against roughly 7.9 for steel, so a genuine two-tone Datejust or Submariner should feel denser than its all-steel sibling, not the same. I put a copy on a kitchen scale next to a published spec before anything else.

Fake Rolex Rolesor: How to Tell a Two-Tone Rolex From a Counterfeit

  • Edge color. Plated links show a faint brass line where the coating meets the steel, especially at the underside of the bracelet.
  • Color match. The gold on the bezel and the gold on the bracelet should be the same alloy and the same hue. On copies they often come from different suppliers and read differently in sunlight.
  • Clasp wear. The clasp is where plating dies. Look at the fold-over edges and the crown for grey steel showing through.
  • Hallmarks and stamps. Genuine gold components carry the appropriate marks, and the caseback and lug engravings are crisp and deep. Laser-etched replicas look shallow and slightly soft at the corners.
  • Weight distribution. A real two-tone bracelet is heavier on the gold center links. Copies feel uniform.

The legal side, briefly

Selling a counterfeit watch in the US is trademark infringement, and importing one can get the parcel seized and destroyed by Customs and Border Protection. Rolex service centers will not touch a counterfeit, and independent watchmakers often refuse too, which matters when the movement needs work. Resale is where buyers get hurt most: a two-tone copy sold as genuine is a fraud, and the loss usually lands on the person who paid for it. None of that stops the market from existing. It just means the risk sits with whoever holds the watch.

The checklist I would use

  1. Ask what the gold actually is: plated, capped, or solid. Get a straight answer in writing.
  2. Ask for the weight in grams and compare it against the published spec for that reference.
  3. Photograph the bezel and bracelet in the same frame under daylight and check the color match.
  4. Inspect the clasp edges and the crown for plating wear before you commit.
  5. Confirm the reference number and serial, and expect the price to reflect what the metal really is.

Two-tone is the hardest category to copy well because the copy has to fake a material, not just a shape. Judge the gold, not the dial, and the answer usually shows up fast.
